I am not picking on this comment solely.  I think however, that this
situation is a particular instance of a more general phenomeon of
commodity computers and networks.  When does the user experience prompt
the user to change behavior or computers or networks?  At least part of
the answer to that question relies on there being alternatives that work
better and an effective marketing campaign to switch to those alternatives.

If the situation in Universities is really better, rather than just a
smaller fraction due to our early adopter status, then we have some
valuable things to offer private industry to help them make a more
attractive networked computer experience.  Even if our situation is not
really any better, maybe we should invest in creating a better commodity
network/computer experience for private industry to adopt.  Or, if
private industry has already created such a better experience, maybe we
should move wholesale into adopting it, once again being the early adopters?
