It will work, but is just not as generic and funny as the other techniques IMHO... And it's all about having some fun from life, isn't it? ;)
True. But true fun is if all of the stuff being done has not been done before .. detecting whether you are living in a "created" environment is all about getting to know the boundaries of the same. This in essence is trivial, the details can be sketched in many ways. Also you have to note that most virtualization software is designed to provide programmers with test harnesses .. now being used by malcode testers ( i.e. if the malcode is reasonably dumb .. which is the case with most browser based tricks ). A hypothetical possibility, setup a smart solution involving a few good tricks with ram drives and you have real trouble .. because your boundaries are getting very blurred .. and the dude running the gig will be having an absolute ball cause he will be faster than any emulated environments yet having blazing speed. Now you see it .. and next you don't. The whole thread reminds of optimization contests ;-).
