We use a service (pingdom.com) to monitor our websites.

There's two really nice features about that specific service. First is it's cheap. Second, the checks can also look for 
specific text on a page. We have specially crafted pages that make calls to the database and file system and display 
either a "Pass" or "Fail". If the website is up but that page display's fail, we get an alert.
