SANS suggests that 1 pass with zeroes  is enough.

(I'll still put my money on 1-random pass in raw mode + SATA controller
zero write though, just for tin-foil effect).

Sanitizing media with the 35-pass algorithm might well be overkill in
most cases (and if someone does not possess a shiny-new industrial
super-fast speedy disk+controller) will take a lot of time for your
average HDD.
Overwriting something using the file-system facilities can be
"dangerous" with regard to effectiveness in today's journalling filesystems.

You can also use  secure-delete kit from THC Team which also uses Peter Gutman algorithm (same as DBAN). 
With this you can make your solution scriptable without the need to boot up from a disc.
