RE: Port Monitoring Software

Ipmonitor from Solarwinds is a bit pricy but quite useful -
http://store.solarwinds.com/s.nl/sc.16/.f.

What's Up Gold is great too.

We use them both.

If key availability metrics (five 9's) are a requirement, I like what we
get out of What's Up.

Both of the above have an MS-SQL backend in our environment.

There also appears to be Spiceworks http://www.spiceworks.com/ - I
downloaded this but have yet to install in the lab. Frankly, this may
not happen because my web proxy reported the following Trojan after
downloading Spiceworks:

"The transferred file contained a virus and was therefore blocked:

VirusName: "WW: Trojan.Dropper.PSW.ProductKey.B"
Url: "http://download.spiceworks.com/Spiceworks.exe";
File: "http://download.spiceworks.com/Spiceworks.exe";
File type: "application/executable""

Could be a false positive but just be careful with these 'free' and
'trial' downloads.

Regards,
Nathan

Try Hobbit. It's a fully GPL'd remake of Big Brother. Generally more
efficient than Big Brother, when it comes to numbers of servers.
http://hobbitmon.sourceforge.net/

If you need it to be windows based, there's IPSentry
http://www.ipsentry.com/ which is pretty basic, but works.

Subject: Port Monitoring Software

Dear All,

I have been assigned the task to recommend a freeware / low value
purchase software for our helpdesk to monitor tcp port status & server
availability. Can anyone recommend a simple & efficient product that can
run on Windows XP / 2003. Basic requirements would be -

1. To check the ping status
2. Check whether particular TCP ports are responding
3. Have a dashboard to give a quick representation
4. Must have an smtp engine to alert via emails

I am aware of Big Brother, just wanted to check if anyone could vouch
for a better software.

Thanks,
Tinu Koshy

PS: If you know of a Linux based software, please do suggest that too.
