Go to Amazon - there are at least 3 GSEC books. At least 2 of them are
easy to find and both are directly focused on the course - one being
written by the course authors.

SANS GIAC Certification: Security Essentials Toolkit (GSEC) by Eric
Cole, Mathew Newfield, John M. Millican, and Stephen Northcutt
(Spiral-bound - Mar 18, 2002)

The GSEC Prep Guide: Mastering SANS GIAC Security Essentials by Mike
Chapple (Paperback - Jun 27, 2003)

Sans Giac Certification: Security Essentials Toolkit (Gsec)
(Certification) by Eric Cole (Paperback)

Hey Ron,

I'm not aware of any books available for the GSEC. You really need to
get the SANS Material to do well on the test, as the questions are
directly based on what's in those books.

The best way to get the GSEC on a budget is to participate in the
work-study program. It'll still cost you 500 bucks, and they'll work
you pretty hard at the conference, but you get the full coursework and
the exam attempt. Plus, you meet all sorts of cool people, interact
more closely with the instructors, and just get a better understanding
of how everything works. It's invaluable.

Another cheaper route is the local mentoring program. You should have
a class in your area. It takes, IIRC, about 3 months for the program
to conclude. You'll be responsible for learning the coursework while
your mentor is there to explain anything that's not clear and
generally reinforce the stuff you learn in the books.

Hello list. I am looking to study for the GSEC certificate and besides
going to the SANS course I can't seem to find any worth while books. The
books I did find were out of date and not recommended.

Does anyone have any recommendations?
