As long as you have the following allowed as an exception on the client wkstn, I don't see why you'd have to disable 
the entire XP firewall service:

Name: File Transfer Program
Path: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\FTP.EXE

The simpliest way to ensure this is allowed as an exception would be to open your "Windows Firewall" settings menu via 
"Control Panel", then click on the "Exceptions" tab and make sure the "Display a notification when Windows Firewall 
blocks a program" option is enabled. Once done, FTP to your target host and have M$ allow this exception.
