Why can't Firefox and Thunderbird find their own updates?

I've been perplexed since the whole Firefox/Thunderbird popularity craze
with one question:

Why can't Firefox and Thunderbird find their own updates?

I have Firefox 1.07. I went to Tools, Options Advanced, Software Update,
Check Now. It said no updates found, when 1.50 is waiting to be
downloaded.

I have Thunderbird 1.0. I did the same...went to Tools, Options,
Advanced, Software Update, Check Now. It said no updates found, when
1.07 is waiting to be downoaded.

Maybe I'm doing something wrong...you know...expecting the Check for
Updates feature to work when I click on it. So, open source is supposed
to kick Microsoft's butt and offer me a secure alternative when the
simple click update features don't even work.

I think I've already complained here before, but I would have thought
this problem would have been fixed in the intervening six months.
