The two mentioned below are great! I used those as well, but also there is one called Hackers Beware that helps you understand what hackers do and how tools work. I found it very helpful. It is by Eric Cole. The amazon listing is at http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0735710090/qid=1078360824//ref=pd_ka_1/104-1918290-8075924?v=glance&n=507846 Jeff *********** REPLY SEPARATOR *********** On 3/3/2004 at 5:54 PM Meidinger Chris wrote:
I second the motion. Stephen Northcutt may be kind of hot-headed in real life, but he is one of my favorite authors. "INSIDE: Network Perimiter Security" is fantastic as you mentioned Paul; Stephen Northcutt and Judy Nowak's "Network Intrusion Detection: An Analyst's Handbook" is also absolutely fantastic. Murad, et al... Your best investment comes from New Riders publishing. They have a series of books focused on security mostly from and or by/overseen Stephen Northcutt. Network Intrusion Detection will teach you all about reading "the wire". Intrusion Signatures and Analysis will help you learn more and Network Perimeter Security is a good primer... Lots of luck.
