In my opinion, getting a good education is a foundation for what ever you want to do later down the road. Heck I went to 4 year school, then MBA, and I still ask myself what I want to do... life changes. A degree is something that nobody can take away from you. Plus when you start applying at the jobs, almost all have bachelors required. If I were hiring and got 2 apps with same skill levels, 1 with degree, 1 without, I'd pickup the degreed resume first. The actual tech skills you learn in school may not be the same as what's in the real world, but those change constantly anyways, so to look 4 years down the road is anyone's guess. It proves you can learn and put out the effort to reach a goal. -----Original Message----- From: DANIEL SIMPSON [mailto:DANSIMPS () uat edu] Sent: Friday, September 26, 2003 6:27 PM To: Kamal Habayeb Cc: Security-Basics Subject: RE: Student-Degree valuable or not? Yah, I wouldn't go to ITT if they paid me. My school is newer ( about 50 years old ) It's a 4 year program full colligate experience. They are regionally accredited. Its not just that well known, but I plan on getting my masters at a ivy school afterwards. -----Original Message----- From: Kamal Habayeb [mailto:mountainfury () fastmail fm] Sent: Friday, September 26, 2003 11:03 AM Cc: Security-Basics Subject: Re: Student-Degree valuable or not? Hey, I just retired from a 4 year stint in Silicon Valley where I was a System Administrator/Technical Engineer for a couple start-ups. I started getting more and more into Information Security and finally decided to quit my boring job and move to Arizona to enter a 4 year program at a private university. I'm getting my B.S in software engineering with an emphasis on security. How valuable will this
degree
be and what are the forecasts for the job market in this field in
about
4 years. The program is REALLY expensive and I cashed out all my investments/savings to pay for it (roughly 10k a year). I might even
go
to law school afterwards. Is this degree worth the estimated 40-50k?
I'm
22 btw, my dream is to work for Microsoft or Goggle for a couple years and start my own security firm. Any suggestions would be awesome. Dann

Just make sure that the school you are attending is regionally accredited and the credits/degree can be transfered to other schools. The reputation of the school is also very important. Don't make the mistake that I made and attend ITT Tech. Make sure the program stands up to the claims that it makes. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ --- ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
