I would suggest using of the distributions tailored to suite, they come well
stocked with squid, firewall IDS sometimes and more.

With a nice web admin.

I'd recommend IPCop or Clarkconnect from personal experience.

You can learn the fundementals with one of these then perhaps later on build
your own machine more suited to your needs using perhaps Debian or
Slackware.
