Don't forget that there are a variety of 'appliance' distributions of Snort:
Security-Onion: http://code.google.com/p/security-onion/
Smooth-Sec: http://bailey.st/blog/smooth-sec/
Redborder: http://redborder.net/

I mention this as you state that time is not on your side
and these might be quicker options for you.

Snort-wise, the RPMs at:
https://www.snort.org/snort-downloads
should be fine for RedHat but obviously don't give you
Barnyard2/PulledPork/Snorby.
