I recently went through the same process, downloading and installing from source, because the ports for snort are a little old. As I recall though, snort complained endlessly about mysql until I installed 'mysql-client' from the ports collection. steps I took: - installed MySQL 3.23.54a standard (binary) for FreeBSD to /usr/local/mysql-3.23.54a-unknown-freebsd4.7-i386 - created a sym link in /usr/local: #ln -s /usr/local/mysql-3.23.54a-unknown-freebsd4.7-i386 mysql - installed mysql323-client from /usr/ports/database/mysql323-client - installed snort from source to /usr/local/snort-1.9.0, ./configure --with-mysql This got snort to compile happily. Dunno if it will help you or not, but, who knows? And, oh yeah, the FreeBSD ports collection rocks. It didn't help me with snort, but it has been a lifesaver for a 100 other pieces of software. I do not have the ports collection installed nor do I want to. I download all the packages and installed them. I have tried using /usr/local and nothing in the prefix but nothing is working.

This of course assumes that you installed mysql via the ports/packages, which it sounds like you did. Of course you could also take a look at my newest doc here: http://members.cox.net/tokashsecurity/ --- nephlite <nephlite () neo rr com> wrote:Hello everyone. I using FreeBSD 4.7 and trying to install apache/snort/mysql/acid/php. Well I have everything ready to go and now I am trying to install snort and have it log to mysql. so I do the following: ./configure --with-mysql and snort compiles fine but then when I try to run it I get an error that snort is not compiled for mysql support and to add the dir in which mysql is installed at. Well I installed mysql from a package while following these instructions from snorts webpagehttp://www.snort.org/docs/FreeBSD44Stable-Snort-MySQLVer1-1.pdfyes i know that this is for freebsd 4.4 but I figured it would work for me. and in the instructions it says to point snort to /usr/local/libexec and mysqld is in that dir. But still no luck. If anyone can help me that would be great.
