I agree, but the problem with cheops is that you can't use the data with
anything else.  If you wanted to use a few tools to map your network, it's
difficult to dump it all to a database.

nothing like doing it by hand to make it the best, but sometimes it can
help to have some automation.

the Linux/*BSD tool "cheops" can be helpful here. i haven't played with it
in a while, so it may not be yet 1.0, but it's kind of neat. you can
actually get a decent map built rather quickly.

also look for opennms stuff, a group that are trying to do an open source
competitor to HP's network management software.
