How much wiping do you do? :)

I had wiped a drive using the DBAN tool and one wipe with 0 (zero). After this i used the Media Tools app to try and see if it can get hold of any of my data. The Media Tools which costs $499 couldnt even recover the file names let alone any data. I had also heard of some contest where they had wiped the drive using dd with 0 (zero) and had kept a prize of $10k. I havent heard of anyone who claimed it. Though the prize money might be an issue for it, but unless you are really paranoid about your data, i think single wipe should be enough. Nice idea tim, but the problem is you'd need some pretty specialist equipment to have any chance of seeing things past 1 wipe. I mean, the drive sends you a 0 its a 0 unless you can get down with your bas science self and find out what the drive doesnt even know. Maybe this is a thing to get bret and ovie in on... Let's get a few "junk" drives, have a few people wipe them, using some paranoid/non paranoid techniques, then send the drives to some one else who will put on a few specific files, a few word & excel docs, photos, a fake quickbooks files, some OS files, what ever, wipe the drives using a series of techniques 1 with the single pass, one with a multi over write, etc then send the drive to people like me, or other volunteers who will then try to recover the data, I'd recommend using different software. Then we'll post the results. Something just does not feel right about a single over write. -- Tim Krabec Kracomp 772-597-2349 smbminute.com kracomp.blogspot.com www.kracomp.com _______________________________________________ Pauldotcom mailing list Pauldotcom at mail.pauldotcom.com http://mail.pauldotcom.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pauldotcom Main Web Site: http://pauldotcom.com_______________________________________________ Pauldotcom mailing list Pauldotcom at mail.pauldotcom.com http://mail.pauldotcom.com/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/pauldotcom Main Web Site: http://pauldotcom.com
