Nmap breaks hosts up into groups to scan them. For host discovery it
scans 4096 hosts at a time. For port scanning the groups are smaller.

My second question is that the scan appears to be stuck at 0.99%. Zenmap
is
not build to search such a large range?
I need it for topology visualization of the net with radialnet.

Scanning that that many hosts is going to take a while. Nmap only
occasionally prints status updates, so it's possible it only printed
0.99% and is still working.

Could be. I just stopped after ~30min and tried a different search.

One thing Zenmap lacks is Nmap's runtime interaction. You can run the
same scan with Nmap at the command line and then open the XML file in
Zenmap. While Nmap is running you can press Enter and it will give you a
completion estimate.

That' a good tip. Will save in xml file.
