In my view one of the biggest keys to usability of a tool in the real world is less is more. A minimalist tool that does a single thing well is better than a touchy feely graphical thing that tries to do several things and doesn't do any of them well. The first thing I would strip out of a tool you are talking about Jake is graphics. It might impress Dilbert's boss but it not only doesn't contribute anything but degrades the performance of the tool. Like they used to say on Dragnet "Just the facts ma'am"
