Dave,

This story uses a local candidate to explore the
fuzzy issue of office holders using taxpayer-sponsored
government Web sites to promote themselves at election time.

Does promotional material belong on state sites?

The World Wide Web site says that General Treasurer Nancy Mayer is a
``pillar of public trust,'' a ``watchdog of taxpayer funds,'' a ``warrior
against
corruption.''

You would expect to find such laudatory remarks in an advertisement, or
perhaps on a Web site promoting Mayer's campaign for the office of state
Attorney General.

But these are headlines that appear on the General Treasurer's official
government Web site -- paid for by tax dollars.
