Admittedly, the 50 years before Hiroshima were the most exsanguinating ever, but the period from 1640-1945 was one bloody mess, as compared to 1945 to present. Relative to world population, the total losses since 1945 are about one battle in the Napoleonic wars. When dealing with those who seek power, the guarantee that there will be nothing left to rule seems to work.
