Does anyone have experience with Linux based Firewall/Router distributions
?

I am looking for a cost-effective firewall capable of handling three
security domains (Internal Network, the Internet, and a DMZ) for a SOHO.

A hardened linux box running NetFilter/IPtables with three network cards
looks like a good fit.
However, I would also welcome suggestions regarding low-budget hardware
firewalls meeting these requirements.

Check into the RedWall distribution. It is a run-from-CD that can store
the changed files to either a USB flash drive, a floppy, or you can mount
a local HDD. The URL is: http://www.redwall-firewall.com

The developer, Marcel, is very active on his mailing list and quite
receptive to hints and questions.

This distribution is more than just a firewall -- it has DHCP, Apache,
miscelaneous utilities (telnet/ssh/ping/traceroute/mtr/...), multiple ppp
and VPN installs, stunnel, Snort, MySQL, ACID, Squid, webmin, postfix,
Spamassasin, fetchmail, bind, vsftpd, OpenSSL, php, etc... Quite a lot.
You can leave most of it turned off, or you can enable the special
services as your customer needs/wants it.

No, a Swiss-army knife for a firewall isn't the greatest idea, but for a
SOHO or home which has limited funding for both a server and firewall,
this could be a good solution.
