Re: Email Spam (inbound and outbound) and Malware Protection

The University of Tampa recently (June 2009) installed Sophos
appliances. These replaced Barracuda appliances that we used for several
years to block email spam.

We still get quite a bit of spam. However, when we look at the number of
messages blocked by the spam filters it becomes obvious that our system
would crash if we didn't have them in place.

We still use a Barracuda appliance to filter outgoing mail (i.e. if an
account is compromised and being used for spam we can block the
address).

Subject: [SECURITY] Email Spam (inbound and outbound) and Malware
Protection

We are polling members to determine how they perform e-mail spam and
malware protection:

* How many outsource spam protection (e.g., to Postini)?

* How many perform spam protection in-house (e.g., using Ironport
or Forefront)?

* In either case, what service or application do you use?

* In general, are you satisfied with your solution?

Any feedback is appreciated.
