Long ago, perhaps back in the Pleistocene, a phone could be trusted to make and receive phone calls and otherwise leave well enough alone. Now, of course, with iPhones and Blackberries everywhere, people want to read their mail, check their calendars, and otherwise manipulate College data using their handheld devices.
We support the Blackberry, as the President must have one (I think I heard something similar from another institution somewhere...). Our Computer Store resells the iPod Touch, and many have obtained iPhones on their own, although the AT&T signal in our area isn't very impressive. I will note that these devices come with a Cisco-compatible IPSEC VPN client, so we are comfortable requiring VPN connections to attach to sensitive servers, whether from our own wireless network or from outside. -- Celebrating the 150th anniversary of the publication of the Origin of Species. -- Cal Frye, Network Administrator, Oberlin College Mudd Library, x.56930 -- CIT will NEVER ask you for your password! www.calfrye.com, www.pitalabs.com "Accomplishments have no color." --Leontyne Price.
