How about using Active Directory and Group Policy to force installation of new versions of Firefox? Then only the administrator has to notice the upgrade, download the software, and set up the policy and software package.
That works great, given 2 assumptions: 1) That the AD admin (or somebody) knows how to build MSI's as needed. 2) That the machine is a member of an AD domain. Good luck telling your students in the dorms that they must join the domain (in particular, note the fun and games that happen when they take their machines home over vacation ;)
