I have it checked and it nags me when there is an update - it just did
this morning, in fact, for an update that is now available for one of
the extensions that I use.

Firefox has the option to periodically check for updates.

I have personally never seen it work but it is under:

Tools
Advanced
Software-update.


I leave mine checked all the time.
