I mentioned this to a few friends, and one remarked:

    So the real moral of the story is, if you want to hire a professor for a
    research project, first ask him if he knows what a "backup" is.  Various
    follow-up questions might include things like, "what basic steps will
    you take to secure our $100,000,000 investment?"


Valid questions, indeed.
