So what's the legal angle on any of the thousands of people who mirrored the entire Sysinternals site when the MS acquisition was announced putting up the sources somewhere ? This reminds me of when Securityfocus took down all their exploits and everyone had a giant .tar.gz on their machine. Ian On 11/8/06, Dave Korn <dave.korn () artimi com> wrote:

Where's the sources? http://blogs.technet.com/sysinternals/ ---------------------------------<snip!>--------------------------------- Hi, my name is Otto Helweg and I'm very excited to help lead the Sysinternals community migration as well as help define a plan for Sysinternals growth going forward. I'm a Program Manager in the Windows Server and Tools division but my background is heavy IT-Pro (not too much dev) and I look forward to interfacing[*] with the Sysinternals users. [ . . . ] Our goal is to smoothly migrate the major Sysinternals site components to Microsoft services and keep the same level of service the community received pre-acquisition. Here's how the components are going to match up: Original Sysinternals Site Microsoft Service Mark's Blog TechNet Blog - Mark Yahoo Groups Newsletter TechNet Blog - Sysinternals Web Site TechNet TechCenter Downloads Microsoft.Com Downloads Forum TechNet Forum Source Code Not being migrated. ---------------------------------<snip!>--------------------------------- Woah! "Not being migrated"?! Thanks a BUNCH, "Otto". WTF not? ---------------------------------<snip!>--------------------------------- Source Code: The number of source code downloads didn't justify the migration, support, and possible integration problems it might cause with other Windows components down the road. ---------------------------------<snip!>--------------------------------- Now, how is that for a completely bogus weasel bunch of crap. Source code might cause "integration problems [...] with other Windows components"? Total bullshit. Microsoft is simply irrationally allergic to ever letting anyone see sources for anything and this is like the kind of pathetic blatantly false rationalisations that neurotics come up with to justify their irrational and compulsive behaviours. Microsoft needs to get into therapy[**]. In other news: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/information/licensing.mspx ---------------------------------<snip!>--------------------------------- Installation and User Rights You may install and use any number of copies of the software on your devices. [ . . . ] Scope of License You may not [ . . . ] make more copies of the software than specified in this agreement ---------------------------------<snip!>--------------------------------- I must not make more than "any number" of copies of the software? I'm not sure if this means I can only make zero copies or if I can make infinite copies... cheers, DaveK [*] - sic. I /think/ it's a typo for 'interfering'. ;-) [**] - I know, I know... this is hardly news to anyone! -- Can't think of a witty .sigline today.... _______________________________________________ Dailydave mailing list Dailydave () lists immunitysec com http://lists.immunitysec.com/mailman/listinfo/dailydave
