I don't think you've stepped on egos, I think you just need to learn how to convey your thoughts without slamming people in the process. If you're that good, we and many others could learn a lot from you. However, making condescending or sarcastic statements on the way (which you did from the very beginning) does nothing for us or you, and in fact alienates your audience. I mean, look at the very first sentence you posted - "Clearly you don't have any experience with rootkits". Is that really a good or even accurate thing to posit? Why not instead simply point out the errors you see without making such an offending generalization (and that's really what it was - you don't know that individual at all OR their level of experience)? Then offer suggestions on what should be done instead. If you're really that good, I bet SANS, the NSA, or any of the other high end groups could use your expertise. Or write some books explaining detailing your techniques. I'd buy them if well written! What you've demonstrated though, is that your social interaction/communication skills need to become on par with your technical expertise. I'd love to tap your knowledge, but not if you're going to make me feel like an idiot in the process, especially if I dare question you because I need clarification or don't understand. Have some compassion on your fellow white hats and you'll get more respect and fans. Repairing a rootkit infection is not that difficult. I've been reverse engineering them for years. Those who have suggested a reinstall should be ashamed.
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc512587.aspx Shame on anyone who doesn't suggest to reinstall a compromised system. Even if you managed to pinpoint exactly how the system was compromised and what was altered after the compromisation (and I'm really curious about how you'd do that without having a baseline of the system to compare agains), it would usually take *far* more time and effort than rebuilding the system.
