It does not protect you from application and OS vulnerabilities.

It does not matter if you have FDE if you get hacked.

So...In answer to your question - It IS a slam dunk (IMO) for some
purposes ("lost" removable drives and laptops come to mind, and again,
IMO (and after a proper risk analysis), maybe for the drive wiping
discussion in another thread)
