For military grade software it would have to have been through a formal product certification process like ITSEC or more likely CC. Products suitable for Governmental use (Australian) are listed on the DSD's Evaluated Products List http://www.dsd.gov.au/infosec/evaluation_services/epl/epl.html. Two secure erase products are listed there at EAL2 (Evaluation Assurance Level). The common critieria portal should list all other Secure erase products that have been evaluated through CC. http://www.commoncriteriaportal.org/public/consumer/index.php?menu=4 If you are serious and want a level of assurance of the product's functionality especially given the critical task you are relying upon it for I would recommend selecting a product that has been certified over one that has not.
