I would say that it depends on the level of erasure that you want.  If
you want the data to be wiped to a level that most people cannot recover
it, but if recovery was made the risk would be acceptable, then by all
means a software erasure tool is the right thing to use, and eraser as
many people here have said is an excellent tool.

If however you want to guarantee that the data on the drive/pda/card is
never ever ever recovered then you just can't beat fire.  A hammer my
work, but a sufficiently motivated person may still be able to retrieve
the data off the broken chip.  A sufficiently hot fire however will
leave nothing but ash.  Incineration is definitely the way to go...  Or
if your going to be visiting Hawaii chuck it in a lava flow.
