Hi Folks. I'm sure Bob think right. I have 'specific' MS degree in computer security University gave me three things 1) pretty good math (4.5 years), programming, system and networking fundamentals 2) Special courses (cryptography, informtation security fundamentals, OS security, network security, database secutiry, defence against secret service technical investigation, etc. 3) Special kind of thinking Where "3" is flow out from "1" AND "2" AND experience. "3" will not be valuable without "1" and "2". Best choice get computer security related degree (all inclusive, like me ;-))or BOTH a business AND a computer science backgrounds before certification. I think, the only certified man will work fine in 'Good known' situation, but without university degree, his chanses drops in 'Unknown' dangerous situation. regards Vladimir B. The completion of a degree shows a certain process. It demonstrates a certain level of research ability and knowledge. A degree does not do everything for you, but it does help. Most importantly it is important to have an understanding of more than just IT. A "security" engineer with technical knowledge and no process knowledge or business knowledge is oft worse than useless. Security is not about tools and is a Risk based process. Many people with a technical ONLY background do not understand this or the related business controls. Craig -----Original Message----- From: Kain, Becki (B.) [mailto:bkain1 () ford com]

Seems that a person with 4 years of practical computer work should be seen as just as (or more, IMHO), useful that a person with a 4 year degree, but no practical skills. But then again, I'll never understand HR departments.
