Hi Paul,I find that Dan's Guardian ( dansguardian.org ) is the perfect complement for Squid Proxy. Both are free (as in beer) and provide excellent protection for your children. I have used these tools to great success in schools and other
non-profits that I volunteer for. You will need a machine with two NICs and some *nix distribution, myselfI prefer FreeBSD. Easy to install via ports, and for ongoing administration is
webmin configurable, if you don't like text files.I must say, that it's inevitable that your children will be exposed to 'questionable' behaviour from adults. It's vital to be available to give frank answers to their questions, and remember, children are adults in training, they don't need to be coddled, they need to be informed as to what 'values' you're espousing and exactly why this 'questionable' content is inappropriate and causes problems or conflicts with the values you are trying to instill. Always remember to give
your child credit, they're smarter than you realize. Sincerely, Sean Swayze PCSC Information Services PS. Children talk to each other. On 30-Mar-06, at 4:36 AM, Paul Simons wrote:
I am looking for advice on how I can best protect my family from the 'horrors' on the Internet. We have a small ADSL/wireless network at home (with a firewall and AV on all systems) on which my kids have their PCs/Macs. My wife and I use itvia our laptops. What is the best way of stopping access to porn/violence/etc.? I was looking at setting up a system with a proxy. Or maybe paying for some sort of service? I don't really want to have to install a package on every system (expensive and unmanageable) Any other suggestions gratefully considered Paul To find out more about Reuters visit www.about.reuters.comAny views expressed in this message are those of the individual sender, except where the sender specifically states them to be the views of Reuters Ltd.---------------------------------------------------------------------- -----EARN A MASTER OF SCIENCE IN INFORMATION ASSURANCE - ONLINE The Norwich University program offers unparalleled Infosec managementeducation and the case study affords you unmatched consulting experience.Tailor your education to your own professional goals with degreecustomizations including Emergency Management, Business Continuity Planning,Computer Emergency Response Teams, and Digital Investigations. http://www.msia.norwich.edu/secfocus---------------------------------------------------------------------- -----
