I agree, I also like to run fport and/or nmap at the machines and see what turns up.
4. I would NAT on a separate box as opposed to your server. I'm assuming your server is Windows based? Even a cheap Linksys "router" would be a better choice than having a Windows fileserver doing Internet sharing as well.
Definately, spend the $20 on ebay and pickup a cheap NAT router or firewall. I would never recommend having a Windows system do routing on a public facing network. If they are using email get something to filter and scan it for viruses, or get an AV program that will check incoming messages on the client. -Jimmy
