How about on a single-interface system? Maybe Wireshark should at least select the only listed interface as the

Correct. But is there a system with only a single interface? All the systems I use have a loopback
interface and at least one more... Since I'm not using Solaris, I
can always capture on two interfaces
at least. Are there systems out there with only a single interface?

Not sure if the scope is limited to discussing certain OSes, but on
Windows we often had/have training class PCs with just one interface.
Ahh. OK. An OS I have (almost) no experience with...

On a multiple interface system, I can see the logic of either method--either selecting the first interface or
selecting no interface if the user has not specified a default. Neither method is clearly superior and the choice
of which should be implemented is a matter of opinion.
OK.

Selecting the first interface seems like an easy way out, but in my
experience (once again, on Windows) it doesn't make much sense - in
almost all cases encountered there is some bluetooth or VPN or pseudo
WiFi adapter at the first position in the list when there's more
than one interface. But that's just my 2 cents :-)
Thanks for providing input!

Best regards
Michael

Cheers,
Jasper
