I have tried Wireshark-1.4.3 download as source tarball and unmodified .
"make doesnt work for us .

We tried different versions of wireshark from wireshark-1.2.6 onwards .But
"make" throws 'Makefile", line 4161: Need an operator' for FreeBSDs.

Earlier version we tried was wireshark-1.0.3 that worked with "make" .

When you say "install the latest Wireshark", do you mean Wireshark 1.4.3,
downloaded as a source tarball and unmodified, or do you mean you're trying
to modify and build Wireshark, whether it's 1.4.3 or 1.5.0 or the top of the
Subversion trunk?

Just downloading a source tarball and running "./configure; make; make
install" (or perhaps "sudo make install" or something such as that) should,
I think, work with *any* version of Make - as I remember, the Makefile
generated by automake and the configure script does all the include
processing when the release tarball is made, so that it doesn't depend on
the way Make does includes, and avoids using other Make-dependent features.
If you're doing *development*, however, you need GNU Make.
