my slackware 8, has 644 perms.

 It depends on the kernel you choose to work with. If you choose 2.4.5
- both /var/log/cron and /etc/random-seed will be 666'ed because of
the umask 000 set by that kernel (those files are created upon first
successful boot, by the system startup scripts). If you choose 2.2.19
kernel - /var/log/cron and /etc/random-seed have 644 modes.
