Hi list, I guess this isn't happening on my system, after all. I confused it with a Debian shell box I also use, which has standard DES. Slackware, like mentioned, uses MD5 hashing and all is well. Just a tip, though: OpenSSH, AFAIK, has to be compiled with --use-md5 (or something similiar) to get it to work. Just in case someone is having trouble with getting it working on a Linux that uses MD5 w/o PAM.
