If the hash is an option (which it should be!), compliant implementations should handle hash values they know about and just ignore those that they don't. The whole point of options is that an implementation that doesn't write a particular option can exchange data with an implementation that can handle that option if present and an implementation that does write a particular option can exchange data with an implementation that doesn't understand that option. This means that we don't have to figure out, in the initial version of the capture file format, all the options that there will ever be. - This is the tcpdump-workers list.
