I was thinking along the same lines when I saw the announcement.

Cisco have a history of swallowing security vendors and the
products disappearing.

Although this is probably not that different from the failed
acquisition by Checkpoint back in the day?

In this particular case I think Cisco are making up for the lack
of having any innovative security products (particularly IPS).

The development of Snort would still be governed by the open source
licence in use, though, surely?
