That's the answer!  And of course is perfectly obvious in hindsight. 8).  Simply renaming the tar.gz like I did is not 
sufficient.  Which I knew.  But forgot.

source,

rename the directory to barnyard2-1.10 and re-tar/gzip the renamed 
directory and copy the resulting tar.gz file  to your  SOURCE 
directory.
