How to Snort IPS?

Hi! I'm use snort-2.9.0.5.

This Snort compile and install.

Is it port mirror of switching hub + Snort promiscuous mode 
and is there a person who is using flexresponse by not installing  
SNORT in the HTTP server and the SMTP server, and installing 
it in the host only for Snort?

please tell me any idea.
