and, I found out snort2.9* has a facility in it to do what I want, 'daq' 
and I am experimenting with it now.
SIGUSR1 seems to be broke on either my port, or the code, or my config.  
I don't know which yet.
once I get that working, I can see what the throughput is, using 
if_bridge on freebsd and snort /snortsam, or using snort DAQ
