I am having similar problems and am following this thread. Thank you Joel.

mysql> select * from `schema`;
+------+---------------------+
| vseq | ctime               |
+------+---------------------+
|  107 | 2009-03-05 12:07:54 |
+------+---------------------+
1 row in set (0.01 sec)


Currently, I also receive no new mysql records although alert log file
is updated every few minutes.
