I second that.  There are HUGE books written on how to properly
configure SM.  It's so complex that's it really difficult to do
properly. Using Sendmail to send yourself email alerts is the equivalent
of using tactical nukes to swat mosquitoes.  Postfix is pretty simple,
in comparison.  It's also a lot easier NOT to accidentally create an
open relay.

If sendmail has you stumped, you might want to install
postfix instead.  Its probably a good idea to be
running postfix anyway, and its pretty simple in
comparision to sendmail configuration.  postfix.org
