enable output alert and log for unified

Hello,

 Using unified output with barnyard does one need to run 2 processes
of barnyard to get teh data out of the alert and log output?

 I was under the assumption that the log unified output contained
"all" the data and th alert output contained less informative data. 
However if i dont specify an alert output file,one is created anyway
by default.  Do i need to use this file ?

I currently have snort with the lines:

output log_unified: filename snort.unified.log, limit 256
output alert_unified: filename snort.alert.log, limit 256

and barnyard with:

/usr/local/bin/barnyard -c /etc/snort/barnyard.conf -d
/usr/local/snortlogs/ -f snort.unified.log -g
/etc/snort/rules/gen-msg.map -s /etc/snort/rules/sid-msg.map -w
/usr/local/snortlogs/barnyard.waldo

so as far as barnyard is concerned, it knows nothing about an alert
file, is this an issue?
