Re: Snort invented by the NSA?

Actually, I'm a *rogue NSA agent* with an *evil plan* to destroy capitalism as we know it by fostering the spread of open source software, all part of my nefarious plan to convert the USA to socialism (like all open source software people)!

I used to work for the government as a contractor (can't confirm or deny NSA affiliation) and Maryland DBED is a Sourcefire investor, maybe they got their wires crossed or something. Last time I checked it was just me writing it originally, I think if you go back and look at the first release of Snort (still available on snort.org) you'd see that it wasn't especially good for much back in the early days...

I'll be brief: I just came across an article on Gazette.com stating that the NSA invented Snort. My original DC SUG post/thread can be found at

I knew it! Marty is just a front-man for the NSA. Actually, all Snort
developers are spooks. Brian is from the CIA. He earned his nickname
Cuts-well during special ops, and later adopted it to Caswell...

... Where is my tin-foil hat?

But seriously... perhaps they meant to say Shadow instead of Snort.
AFAIR, it was co-developed by the NSA, and it's an IDS. Both start with
an S, so maybe they got confused :)

Cheers,
Frank
