RE: ANVIL - WAS [Snort-users] which rules to download

Patrick and list,
Let me apologize first off. I wrote my primary email with an incorrect
tone, it was not meant to be a sales pitch or free based advertisement. To
answer Patrick's question. Our product can use snort and is not opensource.
We do however suggest using snort because it is free, opensource, fast, and
flexible.

Enough about our product, my intentions were not to advertise our product,
but to learn more about what gripes people have with IDS systems. The market
is saturated with unhappy IDS administrators, and I want to hear what they
have to say. Our goal is to provide a real working solution to these
gripes.

So, again, I apologize for the advertisement, it wasn't my goal. I've had
enough flames.

Is this an opensource product? It looks commercial from the website
(appliance based). I do not even see a mention of Snort
interoperability on your site although you mention it in your e-mail.
Just wondering.

Also, wondering why you responded to someone's question with a pitch
instead of sending a new e-mail to the list. I guess I am just curious
this early Friday morning.

Greetings list,
We are going on release 3.3 of ANVIL which is a front end for
snort and other IDS engines. The basic idea is to provide a powerful
and effective interface to IDS engines for small to enterprise level
networks. I am interested in input from users of IDS existing systems.
I'd like to hear what gripes people have, what people would like to see,
features, functions etc. Thanks in advance for your comments and flames
(I am sure I will get some).

What is the difference between snortrules-snapshot-CURRENT.tar.gz and
snortrules-snapshot-2_1.tar.gz rules?

Which set of rules should be downloaded if you want to use the snort
process with the latest and greatest rules?
