I would add to this that I think what is meant by these statements is that Promiscous mode IDS is dying. This will then be replaced with inline, emedded, etc. You would be amazed how many people I talk to that do not pick up on this difference. ------------------------------------------------------------------- Brian Laing CTO Blade Software Cellphone: +1 650.280.2389 Telephone: +1 650.367.9376 eFax: +1 650.249.3443 Blade Software - Because Real Attacks Hurt http://www.Blade-Software.com ------------------------------------------------------------------- -----Original Message----- From: snort-users-admin () lists sourceforge net [mailto:snort-users-admin () lists sourceforge net] On Behalf Of Josh Berry Sent: Tuesday, October 14, 2003 11:56 AM To: Sean Perry Cc: snort-users () lists sourceforge net Subject: Re: [Snort-users] tippingpoint The Gartner Group started this debate and it has stirred up a lot of controversy. Personally, I do not think internal deployments of IDS systems can ever be compeletely replaced until IPS solutions are moved into the core of the network (at the switch level), otherwise you miss machine to machine communication behind and in front of the IPS. I believe that TippingPoint is trying to do this with their products but I am very skeptical as to whether the technology is there to build an IPS solution capable of handling that much traffic without dropping large amounts of packets or completely missing exploit.

wonders why we even use Snort when we could spend money on a solution
rather than have it free. :-P Gotta spend that money, you know. Thanks. KJIPS vendors and the trade mags have been talking about how useless IDS
are lately. You might want to sniff around on google and the like. At least one mag (lost the name) had an article a month or three back stating that IDS would be dead and gone in 2 years. ------------------------------------------------------- This SF.net email is sponsored by: SF.net Giveback Program.
