Chris,

Can you furnish the fixes to Brian so he can add them to Snort.org? It
doesn't make much sense to have 2.0.6 available on Snort.org if it's broke.

The Windows binaries can always be found as an alternate to Snort.org on:

CodeCraft Consultants: http://www.codecraftconsultants.com

WINSNORT.com: http://www.winsnort.com

Yes, there was a bug in Snort 2.0.6 (Build 100) and 2.1.0 (Build 9),
preventing the Win32 Service from starting. It has been fixed in 2.1.0
(Build 10) available from our website (www.codecraftconsultants.com).

Snort 2.0.6 was not fixed on snort.org because 2.0.x versions have been
discontinued. However, a fixed installer for 2.0.6 (Build 101) is
available from www.codecraftconsultants.com.

Subject: RE: [Snort-users] WinSnort and MSSQL Problem

Hey - I'm having the same problem on my win2k box....snort runs fine
when not used as a service. Running Snort 2.1 - I get errors:

FROM Command Prompt: net start snort

The service is not responding to the control function.
More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 2186.

FROM Services MMC:

Could not start the Snort service on Local Computer.
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request
in a timely fashion.

But firing up snort from the command prompt using snort.exe directly
works like a charm...

I've checked permissions on the snort.exe and all other files involved
and everythings ok. Any help would be appreciated as it's much more
convenient to be running this as a service. Thx,

- Mike Couch
