Erin,

I was installing snort on Solaris 8 intel and running into the exact
same issue you are seeing. I did what someone else here recommended and
commented that final group of lines in the Makefile and it compiled
good. I haven't tried to run it yet though.

Erek, I've already got /usr/ccs/bin last in my path, and I'm already
using
gmake 3.78.1. Whatever is going on here seems to be new, as I've had
zero
issue compiling previous Snort 2.0.x versions on this machine until
now........

a vi of the Makefile shows this on line 484:

$(distdir)/verstuff.pl $(distdir)

Has anyone else seen this yet?

Are you using the default Sun make? I've seen it do some rather odd
things. I usually suggest installing Gnu make as 'gmake' in /usr/local/
and placing /usr/ccs/bin last in your path.

Give that a try and see if it helps.

Cheers!
